PRESS RELEASES
IDT's Net2Phone Names Clifford Sobel President
Successful Entrepreneur to Head IDT's Internet Telephony Division
HACKENSACK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 1997 -- IDT Corporation
(NASDAQ: IDTC) today named Clifford M. Sobel president of IDT's
Net2Phone division effective today. In his role as president, Mr.
Sobel will work towards securing additional partnerships and expanding
the divisions presence worldwide. He will also be active in helping
the Company develop and market the division's technologies and commercial
applications, such as Net2Phone, the Company's PC-to-phone service,
and Net2Phone Direct, the service bridging two telephones via the
Internet.
A long-time entrepreneur, Mr. Sobel founded a number of multi-million
dollar import-export companies, including DVMI, Bon-Art International,
and Bauchet International, all of which were awarded the Sears Chairman's
Award. When sold in 1994 by Bear Stearns, Mr. Sobel's companies
were employing more than 500 employees nationwide.
``Cliff Sobel has a distinguished record as a businessman and entrepreneur.
The combination of his skills and IDT's business momentum should
make for a powerful combination,'' said Dennis Bovin, Vice Chairman
of Bear Stearns.
``IDT is fortunate to have recruited Mr. Sobel,'' said Len Lauer,
President and CEO of New Jersey Bell Atlantic. ``Cliff has a strong
standing both in the New Jersey and international business markets.
He also has a successful track record in entrepreneurial business
opportunities. His international exposure combined with his entrepreneurial
skills will make him a valuable asset as he leads IDT in this fighting
telecommunications market.''
``Without exception, Cliff is by far the hardest working businessman
and best salesman I have ever known, and I am proud that he has
decided to join IDT,'' said IDT's CEO Howard Jonas. ``It is very
unusual for a self-made individual who is one of the nation's most
prominent businesspeople to take a full-time job working for a public
Company, but when they do, it says something extraordinary about
the Company and the opportunity.''
``Cliff has been a beacon for the state of New Jersey, and has
helped us advance our economic development tremendously,'' said
Gaulberto Medina, Commissioner of Commerce and Economic Development
of the State of New Jersey. ``Without doubt, Cliff is the best friend
the state has had in the past four years. He is a decent and honest
person who not only has tremendous competence, but great integrity
as well. He is unstinting in his commitment to quality, and is one
of the finest and most exceptional people I have met.''
Mr. Sobel is an active businessman, philanthropist, and community
activist both in New Jersey and throughout the US. He was appointed
to the Executive Committee of Prosperity New Jersey, a commission
for New Jersey's economic growth, and currently serves as Chairman
of the Republican State Finance Committee of New Jersey. By Presidential
appointment, Mr. Sobel is a member of the US Holocaust Memorial
Council. Mr. Sobel serves as Chairman of the Board of Overseers
for the Alexis de Tocqueville Institute, and serves on the boards
of Business Executives for National Security and New Jersey Performing
Arts Center. He has also served on the US Government Industry Sector
International Trade Advisory Board.
